I didn't download it because it wanted the Host ID before it would do so. And so I was never offered the evaluation option either. So it didn't download. And when I tried to get a Host ID, I was directed to 'Having more than one MPLAB on the machine' or some such, which required entering about three lines of gibberish into the Mac's Terminal (or whatever is the equivalent to a Windows system screen). I don't want multitple instances - just one working one!

(To say that the Microchip user interface when they are selling something is User Hostile is an understatement.). I did as VkPanchal suggested, and went through the process described on the Microchip website to install the XC8 compiler.

I want to try the 60-day evaluation before paying good money. When I got to this screen (see attached screenshot).The MAC address was already filled in by the installer - as you can see.

I clicked on the 60-day evaluation of PRO, but MPLABX remains ignorant of its existence, because it still warns me that: You have compiled in FREE mode.Using Omniscient Code Generation that is available in PRO mode. What I have noticed is that the MAC address of my router is not what's shown and wonder whether the installer or MPLABX doesn't recognise the correct address?

This thread seemed to slip by me, so this response is more for anyone else with the same problems. There is a compiler installation and licensing guide you can read, and webinars on the installation and activation process, e.g.

You will see reference to an xclm application. This is found in the compiler's bin directory. Run it to show a list of options you can use. If you use the -hostinfo option, it will print the hostID of the machine it is run on, but note that the installer will tell you your hostID when you install something. There is also a -status option to show those licenses it knows about.
